Insurer fires employee who performed magic while off sick

It was a case of ‘now you see him, now you don’t’ at Legal and General this week after resource planning manager Peter Hopkins was sacked by the insurer.

His crime? Performing as Mr Hocus Pocus, a wizard – complete with shiny green robe and pointy hat – while being paid on sick leave.

He claimed his doctor had encouraged him to perform the magic shows to help overcome his stress-related illness.

Backchat, meanwhile, is now available to perform at birthdays, christenings and bar mitzvahs……

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
