Soaring insurance premiums could lead to cowboy contractors flooding into the roofing business.
With roofing contractors facing rises up to 800% and an average of 153% for their cover, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors warned that reputable companies could be driven out of business.
It fears cowboy contractors working without insurance would inevitably fill the gap in market.
The NFRC warned this could have "potentially catastrophic consequences for clients."
It represents 41% of the UK's roof contracting market by turnover.
Roofers are deemed among the riskiest operators to insure in the construction industry, already a high risk category.
The NFRC is surveying its members' accident records to help them get cover.
Members must have employers' and public liability insurance.
Federation chief executive Edward Cowan said the survey results were likely to show that members had "consistently good accident records and no claims histories compared with some in the non-federated sector."
