Zurich is including cover in its Home Solutions Contents policy for the policyholder's children who live either in halls or in private accommodation when they become students.

The insurer's latest study found that some student properties contain as much as £10,000 worth of gadgets and technology.

Even the most impoverished student has as much as £1,630 of gadgets lying around.

The figure is backed up by research by NatWest, which found that three-quarters of present undergraduates have more than a £1,000 worth of equipment, and more than 40% have valuables worth more than £2,000 – but nearly one-third will fail to insure their treasured possessions.

Home Solutions provides cover against theft or attempted theft, and accidental damage.

There is a £50 excess for up a claim up to £5,000.
