More than 100 homes have been destroyed by the fires that have raged in bushland around Sydney for over a week.

More than 1,300 insurance claims have been lodged by people affected by the fires.

The total bill for the damage is expected to exceed A$50m (£17m).

But the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) said it is still adding up the cost of the worst bushfires in New South Wales in seven years .

ICA spokesman Rod Frail said: "We are speaking to the large insurers which have the bulk share of the market."

Claims have so far been made for more than 100 homes and 200 other buildings.

The country's largest insurer, NRMA Insurance Group, said it had received about 779 claims by 31 December 2001.
