For those in the industry who pooh-poohed John Jackson's recent column pointing to an emerging compensation culture, Backchat would like to draw on recent news reports concerning the Trafford Centre, Manchester.

The shopping centre has been hit by a series of claims that beggar belief. A female shopper, well-endowed in the chest area put in a claim for a trapped cleavage. On moving through some revolving doors, she claims, her breasts got stuck.

Another woman claimed for a cricked neck when she was startled by performers in a living statue show. The claim failed because it was found she was a willing participant by stopping and watching the show. Another woman filled her diesel car with petrol at the on-site garage and tried to sue the centre for her mistake.

As such, the centre's management has been hit by soaring public liability premiums despite most of the claims having been dropped as opportunistic.
