Gay and lesbian website Queercompany.com has launched a travel insurance policy that does not discriminate against travellers with HIV.

The policy will be sold under the name Travel Assist and marketed as offering equal cover to all, regardless of sexuality, gender or HIV status. It will be administered by Card Protection Plan (CPP) and is underwritten by UK Insurance.

Travel Assist offers comprehensive cover for all types of travel including short-term cover, annual policies and winter sports insurance.

Colin Goldney, business development manager of Travel Assist, said CPP had been approached by Queercompany.com when it was looking for HIV-friendly insurance policies.

“They were not looking for special treatment they were looking for equal treatment,” Goldney said.

Wanda Goldwag, managing director of Queercompany.com, said it was proud to be the first online or offline business to be offering totally non-discriminatory travel insurance.

“It has been an uphill battle to find a company brave enough to take on this challenge to the insurance industry and we are delighted that Travel Assist has risen to that challenge,” she said.

Queercompany estimates the lesbian and gay community has a total disposable income of up to £10bn a year.
