Wren Aerospace is cutting the amount of aviation business it writes.

Active underwriter Simon Clapham said he had written to aviation brokers almost two weeks ago to notify them that syndicate 800 would become even more selective in which business it accepted.

“I've just made a decision for my business unit to announce that we're still writing business but we're being much more careful than we've been before,” Clapham said.

“We've always been very selective [but] I'm very aware that the reinsurers want their money back.”

Clapham said he doubted the scaling down of aviation activities by a significant underwriter such as Wren would trigger any similar activity by its peers.

“Each insurance company has its own management structure to decide what's best for it,” he said.

Clapham also runs the Marham Space Consortium specialising in space risks.
