Swiss Re has extimated its exposure to Hurricane Jeanne to be approximately $150m (£84m) before tax.

The company said that because the four hurricanes came in close succession and struck in a similar area there were issues that needed to be addressed before payouts could be made.

Swiss Re said it would take weeks before clients could assess which damages arose from which storms and their corresponding claims.

Swiss Re estimated its claims from the four hurricanes, together with Typhoon Songda in Japan, would be in the range of $750m.

It said there could be benefits from using some of its equalisation reserves to absorb part of the financial impact of these claims.
