Couple unable to return to the UK after baby’s premature birth

New York City

Allianz has agreed to cover the medical bill for a couple who have been stranded in New York for three months after the premature birth of their baby son.

Katie Amos went into labour 11 weeks early on on Boxing Day after flying with her partner Lee Johnston to the Big Apple for a five-day break. Their son Dax was born two days later, weighing just 3lb, according to reports.

The couple, who have been told they may not be able to fly with their baby until mid-March, face up to £130,000 in medical bills as a result of their stay at the Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan

Friends of the couple, both fitness trainers from Lincolnshire, set up a Facebook funding campaign to cover their expenses.

A spokeswoman for Allianz Global Assistance said that the insurer had been in direct contact with Amos and had agreed to cover the couple’s medical bills.

She said: “We are pleased that both mother and baby are doing well. Following receipt of routine medical documentation from Ms Amos, Allianz Global Assistance UK has confirmed cover and a guarantee of payment is being sent to the hospital.”

Nearly 1,000 people have contributed £11,890.30 to the campaign.
