Proposal to make developers pay insurance for up to 20 years on builds in flood areas

Housing developers make be forced to pay insurance for up to 20 year on properties built in flood prone areas, according to a report by the BBC.

The report states that Labour MP Alan Simpson has proposed that developers foot the insurance bill as part of a strategy to help people cope in the aftermath of a major flood.

Speaking on BBC's Radio 4 programme Money Box, Simpson said: "It would either make them think twice about building on flood plain land or it would make them change the design basis upon which they're built."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is considering the proposal.
