Esure has become the first insurer in the UK to sign up to a database which will give insurers access to an individual's claims history.

Managed by Experian, CUE PI will go live later this year and will provide insurers with details of illness and disease claims for the UK population.

Esure has signed up to the database to enable it to identify potentially fraudulent claims.

The service will also link insurers directly to the compensation recovery unit, cutting down on paperwork.

Managing director of Experian's insurance services division Mike Prentice said: "There are thousands of personal injury claims each year and while it is unclear how many of these are fraudulent, if you look at the estimated £1bn cost to the insurance sector, fraud is a big problem.

"CUE PI helps prevent fraud by identifying non-disclosure of claims, false and multiple claims by individuals."

Esure is also joining Experian's established CUE Home and CUE Motor databases.

Head of underwriting at esure Mike Pickard said: "Experian has a strong track record in designing and managing large scale claims databases and already works closely with us, supplying information on flood and other risks and liabilities as part of its Perils service.

"We are confident of the success of CUE PI and pleased to announce our involvement."
