A plastics depot on a Smethwick industrial estate has caught fire, causing what firefighters are describing as the biggest blaze ever in the West Midlands, the BBC reports.

Emergency services were called to the Japyplas depot in Dartford Road, Smethwick, at 23pm on Sunday.

About 100,000 tonnes of plastic recycling material has caught fire.

The BBC said Birmingham International Airport has been alerted because of the 6,000ft plume of smoke caused by the blaze, although it added that no flights had yet been affected.
