Hibs striker Garry O’Connor now faces cocaine charge

Scottish striker Garry O’Connor has been cleared of trying to defraud Aviva over a £93,500 claim on his Ferrari, according to the BBC.

A judge at Haddington Sheriff Court found the 28-year-old not guilty. O’Connor denied the charge.

O’Connor was said to have told Aviva that he hit a deer while driving his Ferrari on 30 April 2011. However, it was alleged O’Connor’s car had been crashed a fortnight earlier by another driver.

The case was pulled by the Crown Office last Friday.

A spokesman said: “It is the duty of the Crown to keep cases under review. After full and careful consideration of the evidence led in this case, it was determined that there was now insufficient evidence to prove the offence beyond reasonable doubt.”

In court, Sheriff Braid said: “You have been found not guilty. You are free to leave the court.”

O’Connor was convicted of possessing cocaine and obstructing police in another trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week.

The court heard that O’Connor was spotted taking drugs by police on 14 May 2011. He gave the police a false name and tried to escape, but was caught. He is set to be sentenced on 29 June.
