The FSA has said that by the end of May, 2,314 ‘minded to authorise' letters had been sent to mortgage and general insurance businesses.

Of these, 691 were sent to primary insurance companies, while 93 were sent to secondary intermediaries.

The FSA said it received 17,586 registrations for application packs from the mortgage and general insurance industries, and 10,515 applications for authorisation by 31 May 2004.

Of these, 5,810 were registrations from the primary insurance market, and 5,292 from the secondary insurance market.

Of the authorisation applications, 4,160 were from the primary insurance market, and 2,464 from the secondary insurance market.

It also said it had sent 1,320 ‘variation of permission' letters to companies already authorised to carry out regulated activities. Of these, 238 were sent out in respect of insurance activities.
