The hospitality industry is failing its employees on health and safety, according to AXA.

The insurer said it has surveyed more than 100 hospitality employees who have suffered workplace injuries. More than half the respondents had been injured in the kitchen, with cuts or burns accounting for 80% of the injuries.

And despite the accidents, only 50% of the employees surveyed had been given healthy and safety training.

Older employees were more prone to injuries, with 47% of over 50s having suffered a workplace accident, compared with 28% of their 18-29 year old colleagues.

Doug Barnett, risk strategy manager for AXA commented: “Employees in the leisure industry need to be particularly aware of the hazards they face in the workplace and should be fully briefed on health and safety procedures. Good health and safety procedures are vital to the running of a successful business. Not only is there a legal requirement to meet minimum standards but these injuries can mean employees have to take time off work to recover and lead to compensation pay outs. In light of this, we are advising all employers to assess the potential risks and dangers that the working environment may pose to their staff and take necessary action”.
