Future home of RSA reflected 70 degree light beam

Fenchurch Street building being built for 2014

A strong reflection of light from a skyscraper that is due to house some of the City’s top insurance firms is said to have melted car parts because of the building’s unusual curved shape.

The building at 20 Fenchurch Street, dubbed the ‘Walkie Talkie,’ is reported to have focused an ultra-bright ray of light onto the street yesterday. The light beam was as hot as 70°C.

Major insurance companies including RSA, Kiln and Markel are due to move into the building when it is completed next year.

A Jaguar car owner also complained to the building’s developers, after returning to his parked vehicle last Thursday, to find the wing mirror and badge melted.

Land Securities and Canary Wharf, who have agreed to meet the repair costs, have told the BBC they are aware of the concerns regarding the beam and are looking into the matter.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
