The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) is launching an independent broker software benchmarking service for its members.

Biba has appointed technology consultants Garol to develop a set of benchmarks against which existing and new broker software packages can be measured.

Mike Williams, Biba's chief executive said: "The benchmarks should give Biba members a starting point for understanding how different software houses and other suppliers' products compare and whether or not they suit the needs of the members' business.

"The aim is to make information available to brokers in a common format, from which they will be able to initiate a programme to select potentially suitable offerings for their own business."

The programme is currently under construction and will be available by July 31. It covers:

  • an analysis of insurance broking processes and activities to determine the factors to be measured
  • building a questionnaire to be completed by software suppliers
  • assessment of and analysis of relevant issues
  • production and publication of the results database in hard copy, on CD Rom and via Biba's website.

The information in the pro-gramme will be updated by Biba as software offerings evolve and as new and revised software versions are introduced by providers.

The database will indicate the features and capabilities of the benchmarked systems, with a facility to allow searching of the CD Rom and electronic versions by criteria defined by the member.

The database will be made available to Biba members on an annual subscription basis at a cost currently anticipated at £125 a year.
