The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (Apil) has slammed a government committee recommendation that the small claims limit should be raised to £2,500.

The Constitutional Affairs Committee will tell MPs they should consider raising the small claims limit as part of the Compensation Bill.

The committee said £2,500 "would be a sensible limit for personal injury and housing disrepair, without impeding access to justice."

But Apil believes a rise will impede justice. It said in a statement: "Personal injury cases have no place in the small claims court and we are deeply disappointed with the recommendation that the limit be increased."
