The total cost of the January floods in Cumbria and Carlisle could top £250m, the ABI told council leaders this week.

Work to repair the damage will take months, while parts of the affected regions are still uninhabitable, according to the insurance body.

The ABI said: “We are looking at between £200m and £250m for the damage in Carlisle and Cumbria. If that were to include the rest of the north of England and southern Scotland, we are talking about £500m.”

The cost of repairs will be met by insurers, local authorities and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Bellwin Scheme, which provides emergency financial assistance to local authorities.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
