Major floods are expected to hit the South because of the highest predicted tides in 40 years.
Next week's early afternoon tides from Avonmouth to Lowestoft are anticipated to be 35% higher than current levels.
The alert was sounded by the Environment Agency's southern region today in advance of early afternoon tides on 7 and 8 October.
The higher-than-usual tides will take place because the moon's orbit comes closest to the Earth within days of the autumn equinox - when Earth's orbit reaches its closest point to the sun.
Last week the insurance industry warned that up to 200,000 homeowners in undefended flood risk areas might not be able to get their properties insured after January. Although those in areas with flood defences would continue to be given cover.
In the past two years the cost to the industry of flood claims has been more than £1bn.
