Travel outsourcing firm sheds 100

RBS is closing the Galway, Ireland, office of its travel insurance outsourcing operation Inter Group Insurance Services, with the loss of about 100 jobs.

The company’s boss Bob Andrews said the closure was due to a fundamental shift in the insurance outsourcing market. “Major clients of Inter Group Insurance Services have recently taken their travel insurance business back in-house and sadly we have no alternative but to make this announcement today. We explored every possible avenue before reaching this unfortunate decision”, he said.

The company is a third-party administrator for mainly UK ravel insurance policies.

In 2002 Churchill announced it would create 600 new jobs at the site, opening a new site with money from the Irish Development Agency, leading to local politicians calling the announcement day “golden Thursday”. Those jobs never arrived after the RBS takeover.

Reports put the jobs loses at 90 full-time and 116, including contract workers. The company said all employees could apply for other roles within the group.
