The insurer’s chief executive says the new hire will help the firm deliver its expansion strategy

Specialist insurer ERS has appointed ex-Deloitte UK director Stavros Martis as its new chief actuary, continuing its latest recruitment drive.

Martis will support ERS’s expansion into new lines of business, including direct and facultative, property, marine and energy liability, political risk, terror and war, cargo and specie, professional lines and specialty reinsurance, such as aviation and marine.

Peter Bilsby, chief executive of ERS, said: “I am delighted that [Martis] is joining the team. Having gained the necessary approvals from Lloyd’s to write expanded lines of business, we are now ready to execute our plan.

“Significant actuarial experience in the business is critical to ensure we drive profitable growth and [Martis] will provide us with the leadership we need to help successfully plan our course as we deliver against our strategy.”

This follows the insurer announcing last month that Syndicate Arcus 1856 has received permission to underwrite new lines of business, supporting ERS’s plans to transform the syndicate into a multiline insurer.

Growth plans

Martis has 25 years of experience within the Lloyd’s and international reinsurance markets.

He has held a number of in-house and consulting roles, most recently as a director at Deloitte, where he led the actuarial team’s advisory and audit work for Deloitte’s Lloyd’s clients.

Prior to this, he worked at KPMG for more than four years in a variety of senior roles, including director and principal advisor.

Speaking about his appointment, Martis said: “This is an exciting period for ERS. Having watched the syndicate’s recruitment drive over the last few months, it is clear that Bilsby is recruiting an extremely talented leadership and underwriting team.

“I am delighted to be joining to work with such an able team and a syndicate with such an exciting growth plan.”
