Crane has ‘accepted the challenge’ to push the bureau to ‘evolve’, says chief executive

The Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) has announced managing director of LV=’s broker division Mike Crane will succeed Steve Maddock as chairman of the board in 2022.

Crane has been part of the MIB’s board since 2018 and brings over 30 years of insurance industry experience to the role.

Direct Line Group’s Steve Maddock has led the MIB Board since 2014.

MIB’s chief executive Dominic Clayden said: “I’m delighted that Mike has accepted the challenge to keep pushing us to evolve so we can best support the industry and fulfil our ambitions to make roads safer, help innocent victims of uninsured and hit-and-run drivers rebuild their lives, and protect people from insurance fraud.

“I’d also like to thank Steve for his contribution to everything we have achieved together. MIB has progressed considerably during his time as chair, and the board, ExCo and everyone at MIB is extremely grateful to him for that.”

Passing the baton

Having started his career at insurance business Commercial Union in the late 1980’s, Crane has served senior positions at both Aviva and RBS Insurance.

Currently, alongside his role at LV=, he is chief executive at L&G General Insurance (GI) - L&G GI is being merged with LV General Insurance Group following Allianz’s acquisition, which was announced in January 2020. 

Crane said it was a ‘huge privilege’ to take over as chairman. 

Maddock added: “It’s been a great honour serving as chairman at the MIB and I am proud of all we have achieved over the last seven years.

“The MIB are at the forefront of tackling uninsured driving and I am pleased to say have made a lot of progress in this area.”
