’Marine is a natural next step,’ says chief executive

Hive Underwriters has expanded into marine insurance and appointed Nick Lewis as marine chief underwriting officer.

Lewis is set to join Hive in July 2026, following the completion of his contractual obligations with his current employer. He joins from Everest Insurance, where he most recently served as head of marine, international.

Hive stated that Lewis would be responsible for building a diverse marine proposition focused on specialist and niche areas, with an emphasis on data-led decision-making and close broker alignment.

The MGA said the move signalled the next phase of its development after launching a space insurance offering at the end of 2025 and building on its established aviation underwriting lines.

Distinctive diversification

Bruce Carman, chief executive at Hive, said marine represented an extension of the business rather than diversification for its own sake.

“Marine is a natural next step for Hive because we see a genuine opportunity to build something distinctive in a class that continues to reward expertise and discipline,” Carman said.

He noted that the MGA’s growth across aviation and space had been driven by attracting specialist teams supported by aligned capacity and data capabilities.

Meanwhile, Lewis said the technical complexity of marine insurance continued to create opportunities for underwriters.

“Marine remains one of the most technically demanding classes in the specialty market and that’s exactly where the opportunity lies,” he said.

He said his priority would be assembling a specialist marine team and developing a portfolio designed to deliver consistent results for brokers and carriers over the long-term.
