Glasgow Caledonian University has officially launched its Cullen Centre for Risk and Governance.

The centrer will address current concerns regarding governance issues in the public, private and voluntary sectors, as well as providing advice and consultancy to these organisations, said the university.

Lord Cullen of Whitekirk, who chaired the Piper Alpha, Dunblane Primary School, and Southall and Paddington Rail inquiries, opened the centre.

The centre's executive director, Lynn Drennan, said: “Effective governance relies on the pro-active identification, assessment and management of risks with calls being made for greater transparency in the way government manages risk and communicates dangers to the public.

Drennan said: “Glasgow Caledonian possesses unique expertise, at national and international level in applied research broadly themed under risk and governance. These are found in areas such as risk, accounting, the built and natural environment, health and social care and nursing, midwifery and community health.

“The Cullen centre will bring these together to act as a partner for industry, public and voluntary sector bodies in this area of research and to maximise opportunities for the collaborative cross-disciplinary research with industry partners.”
