ABI fraud plan
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) expects to release its recommendations on the creation of a fraud-fighting database by September.

ABI anti-fraud manager Debra Weekes said she was currently in talks with insurers about the project, which was launched last December.

"We're doing a needs analysis on what they would want and need from an anti-fraud database," she said.

Weekes said if the recommendations were positive, the project would be put out to tender.

GISC conferences
More than 100 insurance practitioners have signed up for the three pilot General Insurance Standards Council (GISC) compliance conferences. They will be held on 10 May, 14 June and 2 July at the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Conference coordinator Anouska Hall said there were still some places remaining on the conference, which will cost £75 for GISC members and £125 for non-members.

New IUA chairman
The new deputy chairman at the International Underwriting Association of London (IUA) is Carl Bach.

Bach is senior vice-president at ACE Europe and first joined the board in July 2001.

He replaces Tony Latham, who has held the post since the IUA's inception in 1998. Bach also takes over Latham's previous role as chair of the finance, budget and membership executive committee.

Popcorn warning
`Popcorn lung' has emerged as a new occupational lung condition to rival asbestos.

The US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has warned workers who mixed and packaged flavoured microwave popcorn were at high risk of getting serious lung disease.

The discovery was made after eight popcorn factory workers without any other risk factors developed bronchiolitis obliterans, a severe obstructive lung disease.

Four of the eight are awaiting lung transplants.
