Uninsured motoring costs £500m per annum

Police seize 500 uninsured cars a day, with Vauxhall Astra being the most commonly seized vehicle.

In second place is the BMW 3 series, while the Vauxhall Vectra, Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Corsa round out the top five.

The figures released by the Motor Insurance Bureau show the total cost of uninsured motoring is around £500m.

It says that its operations are funded through a levy on all UK insurers, constituting around £30 of the yearly premium for every insurance holder.

MIB chief executive Ashton West said: "Modern technology means that motorists who have no insurance are more likely than ever to be caught. It is simply not worth the risk."

MIB estimates that around 5% of UK motorists were driving without insurance - accounting for some 1.7 million uninsured cars on the road.

The proposed continuous insurance enforcement scheme (CIE), which is set to come into effect this year, will result in higher levels of uninsured drivers being caught.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
