Biba is to launch a membership push following the start of regulation in 2005.

Chief executive Eric Galbraith said the organisation, which currently has just under 2,000 members, would be actively looking to recruit new members once the FSA had released a list of authorised firms in January 2005.

"The key is to get the list from the FSA so that we will know who we want to come into Biba. We can then match the list with what we need to do to be a stronger voice for the intermediary channel."

Galbraith said the aim would be to recruit new members from all sectors of the intermediary market, in order to be a better representative voice for the industry.

Sources said Biba was currently in talks with Halifax Bank of Scotland General Insurance about joining the association.

"We can't comment on specifics but we are looking at moving forward and pushing membership," Galbraith said.

Galbraith added that Biba was seeing a steady stream of new members in the run-up to regulation.

He said that stepping up its political lobbying was also on Biba's agenda for 2005, as was promoting better service levels between insurers and brokers through the use of formal service standards.
