The two insurance focused law firms have voted to combine and create ‘the leading law firm for the insurance sector’

Partners at law firms BLM and Clyde and Co last week (28 March 2022) voted to confirm a merger between the two firms, which will become live in July 2022.

The combined entity will take the name of Clyde and Co, with UK-based BLM becoming part of the firm’s global insurance practice.

BLM focuses on insurance risk and commercial law, with a focus on casualty, personal injury, healthcare and professional liability.

Clyde and Co’s business is more wide-ranging, centring around insurance alongside infrastructure, aviation, energy, marine and natural resources.

Following the merger, the majority of lawyers from BLM will move into the new entity’s casualty insurance practice. The remainder will join the business’ professional liability, healthcare and business advisory teams.

Aligned approaches

Speaking to Insurance Times before the partner vote, a BLM spokesperson said: “The strategic and commercial compatibility of the two firms is undeniable.

“We are both dominant in risk and insurance and our respective businesses complement each other.

”Whilst Clyde and Co is a global business, we both have an extremely strong presence in the insurance sector in the UK and Ireland.”

Following the success of the vote, Matthew Harrington, BLM senior partner, said: “This merger is one of aligned approaches and values, offering huge benefits to our clients in the areas that matter most.”

Clyde and Co’s chief executive Matthew Kelsall added: “This combination bolsters our position as the leading law firm for the insurance sector in the UK by enhancing our ability to offer insurers the depth and breadth of support across business lines and regions they are looking for.”
