HDI Global UK and Ireland has appointed Tom Potter as its new chief underwriting officer for long tail.

Potter steps into the role from his current position as director of liability, where he has helped shape the company’s liability underwriting strategy.
In his new role, which is effective from 1 February 2026, Potter will oversee the long tail underwriting strategy across liability, life sciences, motor fleet and cyber.
Experience
Prior to joining the firm in September 2025, Potter held senior underwriting leadership roles at Axa XL, most recently serving as global casualty underwriting manager for UK and Lloyd’s within the global chief underwriting office.

Over the past 15 years, he has built experience across casualty, environmental, construction and property underwriting.
In his new role, he will report directly to Simon Hunt, interim chief executive at HDI Global UK and Ireland.
Hunt has taken up the role due to Stephanie Ogden leaving the business on 31 January 2026.

His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
