Martin Parker, head of construction at Markel, talks about the company’s submission for the Challenger of the Year category

1. Why did you put yourselves forward for the Challenger of the Year category?

We wanted to highlight to brokers and customers the importance of integrating professional indemnity insurance as standard within contractors combined cover – and how our product is the first on the market to do that.

The product, which also includes EL and PL, is available on Acturis and is a smarter, more complete solution that saves brokers time and strengthens client protection.

The cover solves a real broker problem and it’s working. In the first three months, we’ve had a fantastic response and delivered a substantial number of quotes for brokers.

2. What makes your entry stand out, and why should you win the award?

We’ve set a new benchmark in the market. This is the only contractors combined product with PI included as standard – and it’s now trading digitally on Acturis as well as our own eTrade platform.

Contractors combined is traditionally complex and not widely traded online, but our Acturis offering matches our open-market cover and removes limits on contract size.

Built with broker input, it cuts admin, improves protection and makes placing risks easier for brokers who prefer digital trading. And, as one of our specialist sector-focused products, it’s supported by real people with sector expertise.

3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?

It would be testament to our belief that innovation should start with understanding broker needs.

Winning would recognise the strong working partnership between sales and marketing, IT, claims and underwriting that made this launch possible.

It would be a clear signal that specialist cover can be digitised without compromise and a great moment for the team who made it happen.
