Specialist Risk Group (SRG) has appointed Richard Gurney to the newly created head of specialty role, with the move designed to spearhead the growth of the broker’s international specialty proposition. 

Gurney brings over 20 years of experience to the new role and joins from Marsh, where he has been global head of construction since 2019. 

He also spent 12 years at JLT Specialty, which was acquired by Marsh in 2019.

In his new role, he will be responsible for “deepening and internationalising” SRG’s existing specialty offerings, while also identifying new areas for growth. 

His appointment follows the recent arrival of new SRG UK chief executive Neil Nimmo, as well as new chief commercial officer Sasa Brcerevic. Gurney will also join the executive committee. 

Consistent and compelling

Commenting on the appointment, SRG group chief executive Warren Downey said: ”Gurney is a seasoned and deeply respected specialist in his own right, as well as a consistent, compelling and outstanding leaders.

“Having him join our leadership group at SRG is an important milestone in the next phase of SRG’s development.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
