Government fears helping uninsured is a moral hazard

New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission said it expected at least 100,000 claims from Christchurch’s 7.1-magnitude earthquake on Saturday totalling NZ$1bn (£466m), the Times reports.

John Key, the prime minister, pledged NZ$5m toward a rebuilding fund but warned helping out those without insurance was “a moral hazard”.

At least 500 buildings were designated as destroyed. Power was back to 90% of the city and water supply was working for all but 15% to 20% of residents.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
