Positive steps have been taken in the fight against smuggling with the launch of vehicle method manuals from insurer's research centre, Thatcham.

Customs officials at UK ports will be better placed to clamp down on smuggling, after a unique arrangement with Thatcham, ensured instant access to vehicle construction data through model specific method manuals, the centre has announced.

eScribe, Thatcham's multi franchised repair data product, will form part of the training package for Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officers, to provide up to date and critical information on the deconstruction and reconstruction of the top 100 most popular UK vehicles, for reference during vehicle searches.

Eugene Incerti, director of operations at Thatcham said: “This arrangement is an additional positive step in the fight against smuggling at borders.”

John Nowill, officer at HMRC added: “The introduction of eScribe is another asset that we can use to increase our professionalism and will benefit the general public as it assists us in our task of combating the use of cars to import illicit goods”
