More than two million insurance claims have been made following the four Florida hurricanes, according to reports.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, more than one in five Florida homes had been damaged by the hurricanes.
The institute estimated that insurance claims payments from the four storms would total between $22bn and $23bn, surpassing the $15.5bn record set by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Adjusted for inflation, insured losses from Hurricane Andrew totalled $20bn.
Director of the Hurricane Insurance Information Centre, William Bailey said: “The industry is working hard in the face of the same obstacles faced by Florida – lack of power, phone service and access to properties in some severely damaged areas – to get claims dollars in the hands of our customers and get the rebuilding process underway.”
