Women should not be penalised for the stupid risks young men take on the roads, according to the IUA.
Speaking at the European Women's Association (EWA) Congress in Berlin, IUA chief executive Marie-Louise Rossi said insurance companies must be allowed to calculate premiums and pay claims on the basis of all available statistical data and that includes information about the sexes.
Rossi said: “Women cause fewer accidents so they are less of a risk, so they pay less. There are even companies that offer low cost insurance cover for women drivers only.
“Higher insurance costs for young men send a message to them and their families that accidents will be expensive – that encourages better behaviour."
She welcomed a recent indication that the European Union will eventually decide to limit the application of a proposed new gender equality directive in the insurance industry.
