’We have all lost a friend and a colleague who still had so much more to achieve,’ says colleague
Executive director at the Association of Consumer Support Organisations (Acso) Matthew Maxwell Scott has died.

Maxwell Scott, who was also chief executive of the recently launched Consumer Legal Association (CLA), passed away suddenly at the weekend.
He leaves behind his wife and two sons.
Maxwell Scott ran for parliament as a Conservative candidate in the 2015 and 2017 elections and took up his role at Acso in 2019.
The body launched the CLA in April 2026, with Maxwell-Scott being put in charge of the new trade body.
His aim was to promote the ”positive impact of the £5.5bn-plus claimant legal industry on the lives of consumers, as well as championing the careers of the tens of thousands of people it employs”.

David Whitmore, chair of the CLA, said in a statement: ”It is with profound sadness that we have to share that Maxwell Scott passed away suddenly at the weekend.

“He was a highly respected and highly popular figure throughout the consumer legal industry and beyond. A champion of consumer rights and access to justice, he was a persuasive and energetic voice in Westminster and beyond with his work for the Acso and, latterly, as the chief executive of our organisation.
”We have all lost a friend and a colleague who still had so much more to achieve but our thoughts right now are with his wife, his two sons and family for whom this loss will be far greater. They have lost a devoted husband, a proud father and a loving family man.
”RIP Matthew. We will miss you terribly.”

His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
