Pressure is increasing on Marsh & McLennan chief executive Jeffrey Greenberg to resign, according to reports from the US.
Since the New York attorney general launched its investigation into bid-rigging and price fixing for insurers, the broker has come under growing scrutiny.
Reports now suggest some of the company's ten independent directors have been in contact with New York attorney general Eliot Spitzer to discuss how to settle the lawsuit.
The attorney general is reported to have accused Greenberg of misleading him in the early stages of the investigation, and according to reports, Spitzer will only allow negotiations to take place following his departure.
A plan for Greenberg's departure is now being devised, say reports, and in doing so the company could avoid a criminal indictment.
