Comprehensive car policies Following the launch of Zurich's cut-down comprehensive motor products it is interesting to see the present offerings available in the traditional comprehensive market. This month Defaqto compares a range of policies via the direct channel.Following an active period of change stemming from alterations mainly to third party property liability limits, Defaqto expects a lull in terms of product developments introduced over the forthcoming months. On the criteria selected Cornhill Direct is the top performer, closely followed by NFU Mutual and Liverpool Victoria. Areas of distinction for the Cornhill Direct product are:

  • Courtesy car provided as standard
  • Rescue cover for you and up to five passengers following an accident
  • Up to £250 for hotel expenses if you are unable to return home
  • Full foreign use as standard
  • Possible areas for improvement are:
  • PA benefit for disability limited to £3,000
  • Lock replacement limited to £500.
  • Credit card repaymentWith Christmas fast approaching, credit card debt is probably set to rise, as people will be tempted to put their purchases on plastic and pay off the debt in the new year. But many customers choose not to clear their balances, leaving sometimes considerable debt outstanding. In cases of unemployment or sickness, a payment protection policy helps to overcome the problem of meeting the monthly repayments. But which credit cards offer the best protection cover? There is a surprising amount of variation in the levels of cover provided - particularly as the price of the cover doesn't vary greatly.Of the 50 or so products analysed the Goldfish card is the clear leader, with big banks like Lloyds TSB and HSBC not far behind.Key features of the Goldfish card policy include:

  • Monthly benefit is 10% of the reducing outstanding balance, with a maximum of £2,000 payable per month
  • Benefit is calculated on a daily basis and paid retrospectively
  • Benefits become payable after just 13 days of sickness or unemployment
  • No exclusions for mental illness, stress or backache.
  • Areas where the Goldfish card lags behind the market:
  • Cost, at 89p per £100 of cover, makes this the second most expensive card in the market.
