The insurtech believes that usage-based insurance is the future

Aviva and insurtech Zego have today (8 March 2022) announced a multiyear partnership to provide tailored usage-based fleet policies to trade and haulage businesses.

The partnership will see the insurtech’s behavioural insight, data and telematics capabilities paired with Aviva’s experience and expertise in fleet underwriting and claims.

The deal aims to bring a fair and flexible approach to fleet insurance that is adaptable to customers’ evolving needs.

Maria Crockart, Aviva’s digital trading and automation director, said: “Our partnership with Zego is a great example of how innovation can drive customer centricity, broker solutions and growth.

“Working with Zego builds on our telematics knowledge with a partner [that] has a track record [of] using data and analytics. We look forward to developing tailored propositions aligned to customer usage and we anticipate that the relationship will broaden to include other insurance products in the future.”

Zego first revealed its plans to target the European fleet insurance sector in January this year.

Future of insurance

Usage-based policies, where insurance is paid based on the use of the vehicle, have been useful for fleets during the Covid-19 pandemic - many of which experienced increased workloads.

Zego chief executive Sten Saar said: “We believe this usage-based, data led approach is the future of the insurance market and we are proud to be leading the way by partnering with Aviva to deliver this to trades and haulage customers.”

While usage-based policies provide the option to only pay for the miles driven, flat rate policies offer the option to pay a consistent monthly cost. Both options have the potential to offer reduced premiums.

Zego launched its flat rate policy in October 2021 with Abax, targeted at fleet, courier and private hire firms that typically have high mileage.

Through the partnership, usage-based and flat rate policies will be available to UK trade and haulage fleets insured by Aviva, which have between five and 500 vehicles via direct and broker sales.

Quotes can be received through Zego’s portal.

Saar added: “It’s a privilege to be teaming up with Aviva, a company with so much heritage in the insurance industry. We are excited to bring our experience of insuring hundreds of fleets across tens of thousands of miles on a weekly basis.”
