Michelmores has firms such as Aviva, Hiscox, RSA and QBE within its cross hairs

Law firm Michelmores is considering launching a series of group action cases against eight insurers on behalf of organisations that have had business interruption (BI) claims related to the Covid-19 pandemic rejected.

The insurers that Michelmores is targeting includes:

  • Aviva
  • Eaton Gate
  • Hiscox / Geo Specialty
  • NFU Mutual
  • RSA / New India Assurance
  • QBE
  • Ecclesiastical
  • HIUA / Argenta

The law firm is currently urging businesses that may benefit from the potential group action to register their interest.

Garbhan Shanks, head of Michelmores’ policyholder insurance team, said: “The coronavirus pandemic has adversely affected numerous businesses across the United Kingdom.

“Some have specific policy clauses, such as non-damage property business interruption or disease extension wording, which should cover business interruption losses, yet the insurers who offered this cover are declining claims.

“We are considering launching a series of targeted group actions, with the aim of helping policyholders to receive the indemnity funds that they may be entitled to.”

Michelmores is also liaising with the FCA on certain policy terms which it wishes to see clarified within the regulator’s test case.
