The insurer hopes to make the claims process quicker

Polish insurer PZU will be using Tractable’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform to create immediate end to end assessments and estimates of vehicle damage.

PZU will use Tractable’s AI estimation tool at first notice of loss (FNOL) to provide accelerated repair estimates and cash settlements.

The new agreement represents the first time a Polish insurance company has agreed to utilise an insurtech’s technology in this way.

PZU expects to apply the AI to tens of thousands of insurance claims every year.

Aleksander Surowiak, Tractable’s business development director for central and eastern Europe, said: “This is a breakthrough moment for our technology globally as PZU, one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious financial institutions, will use our AI to accelerate thousands upon thousands of real claims.

“That means our technology will have a material impact, every day, on how quickly Polish insurance claims can be resolved - helping those affected by accidents recover faster.”

PZU is the oldest and largest insurer in Poland. It has worked with Tractable since 2017 and already uses its AI to speed up how bodyshops carry out motor repairs.

The insurer has already processed several hundred thousand claims using Tractable’s current AI based tools, to a total value of several billion Polish zloty (PLN).

Digitised communications

Insurtech unicorn Tractable develops technology to support claims assessment, so that a policyholder can report motor damage via a smartphone.

Its AI - which uses deep learning and machine learning techniques - then analyses submitted images, assesses the damage and calculates repair costs without the need for human intervention.

These results are communicated by the claim handler to the policyholder within minutes, so that customers can make quicker decisions on how to take their claim forward.

The AI also helps to guide insurers’ claims management process, for example – recommending repair options.

Policyholders have the option of accepting a cash settlement for the damage, meaning a claim can be resolved in minutes.

Grzegorz Goluch, managing director for claims and benefits at PZU, said: “This solution helps our customers when they need it the most - at the moment of damage.

“The implemented tool is another step in the digitalisation of the communication [in the] claims handling process.

“Thanks to the use of AI in claims handling, we can meet our customers’ expectations at the highest level.

“Digital processes in the claims handling process ensure fast and precise valuation and immediate payment of compensation.”

Innovation

Tractable’s AI is trained using millions of photographs of vehicle damage. The insurtech’s algorithms learn from experience by analysing different examples.

Marcin Kurczab, director of Innovation Lab at PZU, said: “For many years, PZU has been focusing on cooperation with startups and is open to new partnerships.

“Tractable is a startup that we started working with in 2017 and which today has grown to become a leading global AI company in insurance.”
