The West of England mayor election will be held on 1 May 2025

Reform UK has announced insurance veteran Arron Banks as its mayoral candidate for the West of England.

Banks was formerly in control of Somerset Bridge Group, which used to be known as Eldon Insurance and included the motor specialist GoSkippy brand. The business was sold to Arch Capital Group in 2021.

Before this, he led a reverse takeover of listed Brightside Group, with him also serving as the chief executive at the firm until 2012.

He started out at Lloyd’s in the underwriting department working on catastrophe risks. He then had brief stints at Aviva and Berkshire Hathaway.

Reform candidate

Banks was confirmed by Reform UK as its mayoral candidate for the West of England, which includes Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire, in a YouTube video.

He said: “If I was a young person in the UK today, I’d leave.

“It’s our job to turn that around and really, it’s only Reform that’ve got the balls to turn this around.

“So, vote Banksy for Bristol.”

The election will be held on 1 May 2025.

Other candidates include Helen Goodwin for the Labour Party, Oli Henman for the Liberal Democrats, Mary Page for the Green Party, Independent Ian Scott and Steve Smith for the Conservative and Unionist Party.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
