He passed away at the end of last week

Former Fyfe Group chairman Michael Slack has died at the age of 82.

Tony Knight, managing director at Knightsure Insurance Brokers, told Insurance Times that Slack passed away at the end of last week and had “still been very active in business”.

Slack’s career in insurance began in 1960 – he went onto form his own broker in 1980 with a focus on niche products.

He went onto establish motor insurance specialist Fyfe in 2003, with him also serving as chairman of the broker until it was acquired in 2008.

After stepping down from the role, Slack had told Insurance Times that he would focus on developing another business to provide short-term cover for cars and vans.

His career also saw him serve as a director at the General Insurance Standards Council (GISC) in the 1990s and join the FSA board as a non-executive director in 2004.

Slack also spent seven years working with the Biba board, before stepping down in 2009.

‘Very active’

Slack continued to work, however, with him owning a commercial portfolio. Knight ended up looking after his property management and development interests.

“After moving from Croydon to Hampshire, he contacted me and told me that Knightsure had been selected to look after his business insurance portfolio,” Knight said.

“Quite a privilege given his own extensive experience and knowledge. Only a few days before his passing, we were chatting about the good old days.”

Knight added that Slack had been “very active” in property investment at the time of his passing.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
