The new hire succeeds Johan Slabbert, who will now be playing a key role in the firm’s parent company

Lloyd’s (re)insurer MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL) has promoted chief underwriting officer Andrew Carrier to the role of chief executive, effective from 1 January 2023.

The appointee has so far played a pivotal role in transforming the (re)insurer’s underwriting strategy and portfolio, a statement said.

Prior to joining MS AUL, Carrier was responsible for reinsurance operations for the London market, continental Europe and Asia Pacific at Everest Re.

He also served as group chief underwriting officer at Argo Group for seven years and spent more than two decades at Tokio Marine Kiln – partially as an active underwriter.

Carrier succeeds Johan Slabbert, who has since been appointed to head up MSIG Holdings (U.S.A) Inc. Slabbert will be responsible for driving forward the growth strategy of MS AUL’s parent company – Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (MSI).

‘Relentless focus’

Shinichiro Funabiki, chief executive at MSI, said: “I am delighted to announce Andrew’s appointment as MS AUL’s new chief executive.

“Andrew has demonstrated exceptional leadership over the past two years, particularly through the measures he has put in place to create a best-in-class underwriting function with a relentless focus on client-service and profitability.

“I am confident that Andrew will continue with the great work that he, alongside the broader executive team, is doing to modernise and future proof the business.

“We remain fully committed to supporting MS AUL as the momentum builds behind its long-term growth strategy and its objective to become a leading Lloyd’s syndicate with a sustainable future.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Johan on his new role in the US. Johan’s commitment and contribution to MS AUL’s transformation has been outstanding, leading its successful return to profitability and significantly enhancing its future prospects.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to work closely with him as he spearheads MSI’s ambitious growth plans in the crucial US market.”
