’Every day we seize vehicles but this week’s focus on uninsured drivers highlights our firm commitment to making the roads safer for everyone,’ says sergeant

South Yorkshire Police seized and compounded over 100 cars from the roads during a crack down on uninsured drivers in the region.

Between 10 and 17 November 2025, police collaborated with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) and seized 15 cars per day, leading to 106 vehicles being seized overall.

This is up from an average of 10 vehicles each day when there is no specific clamp down.

The latest crack down was part of a national intensified week of action against the risk uninsured drivers pose.

‘Lives are put at risk’

Martyn Micklethwaite, roads policing sergeant at South Yorkshire Police, said: “People see driving without insurance as a victimless crime but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Lives are put at risk as those who are willing to drive without insurance are more likely to take greater risks and be involved in fatal and serious collisions. Law-abiding people also pay the price for their consequences with higher premiums.
