’I’m excited to begin a new chapter in which I can enhance my learning, develop new skills and be challenged in different ways,’ says appointee
CFC has appointed Markel veteran Nick Line as its new chief underwriting officer (CUO).
In his new role, Line will lead underwriting activities across the group. He will replace chief performance officer Matt Taylor, who stepped up as CUO on an interim basis in February 2025.
Line will join the business in 2026 after 28 years at Markel, where he has held the role of CUO since 2018.
Line said: “In 28 wonderful years at Markel, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside some of the brightest minds and friendliest people in the industry.
“However, at this point in my career, I’m excited to begin a new chapter in which I can enhance my learning, develop new skills and be challenged in different ways. It had to be an exceptional opportunity for me to make a move and that’s why I’m so excited to be joining the CFC team.
“I have always admired businesses that embody innovation, agility and a ‘can-do’ ethos, and CFC is a standout example.”
Experience
During his Markel tenure, Line supported growth in the business through new products, new territories and numerous acquisitions.

He also recently took over as chair of the inclusion @ Lloyd’s committee and currently sits on the Lloyd’s Market Association’s CUO committee.
Louise O’Shea, CFC group chief executive, said: “I am delighted to welcome Line to our executive team.
“He combines deep technical knowledge with global leadership experience, which will be invaluable as we continue to deliver the highest level of service and expertise to our clients across the world.
“Markel’s people-powered approach and exceptional customer service align closely with our own culture, this – together with Line’s commitment to empowering those around him through inclusive leadership – make him a natural fit for CFC.”

His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
