’Ransomware is already back with a vengeance in 2025,’ says global head
Ransomware remains the most costly form of cyber attack despite such claims stabalising in 2024, according to cyber specialist Coalition.
Coalition’s 2025 Cyber Claims Report, released today (8 May 2025), highlighted that ransom demands decreased 22% year-on-year to an average of £850,000 ($1.1m) per attack in 2024.
It also highlighted that the frequency of ransomware claims fell by 3% year-on-year.
However, the report stated that ransomware remains the most costly and disruptive type of cyber attack.
Robert Jones, global head of claims at Coalition, said: ”Cyber attackers, and ransomware actors in particular, still pose a tremendous threat to businesses, with the average demand still in the millions of dollars.
”Unfortunately, ransomware is already back with a vengeance in 2025, as March held the highest volume of public ransomware cases of all time.”
Global claims
Meanwhile, the global count of cyber claims fell between 2023 and 2024, from 1.61% to 1.42%.

However, claims severity grew slightly, from an average claim of £95,000 ($123,000) per incident to £96,000 ($124,000).
Jones said: ”Coalition continues to be an active partner in the fight against bad actors.
”We alert our policyholders to vulnerabilities in their networks, risky security practices and the best ways to mitigate threats to reduce the impacts of cyber attacks.”
