Learning and development lead says firm wants to ’support and nurture the next generation of talent’

Allianz will offer degree apprenticeships in 2025 as part of efforts to expand its initiatives for young talent.

A degree apprenticeship is a job that combines work with higher-level education to help people earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Speaking to Insurance Times, Chelsea Laundon, learning and development lead at Allianz UK, explained that this route offers an alternative to university and an entry point into the industry.

She added: “We want to make sure that we have an entry route for this talent pool so we can support and nurture the next generation of talent.

“It is hopefully a fast-disappearing perception, but the idea that apprentices are school leavers who make the tea is woefully out of date.

“Apprenticeships are genuine jobs with structured training, lasting a minimum of 12 months that lead to professional qualifications.

“Apprenticeships can support lifelong learning, train emerging talent and attract external talent to the business.”

Schemes figures

This comes after professional services and technology firm Davies said that several companies across the insurance industry were struggling to realise the benefits of apprenticeship schemes.

The firm’s survey, which was published on 14 January 2025, showed that 11% of insurance businesses do not know how to establish an apprenticeship scheme, while 19% do not see the value in running a scheme.

Laundon explained that Allianz “always recognised” the importance of apprenticeships and has been offering this alongside graduate schemes since 2000.

Laundon explained: “Internally, we currently have over 200 people actively studying for apprenticeships on a range of areas, including 31 level 4 data analysts, four level 7 systems thinking practitioners and six level 4 vehicle damage assessors.

“Other areas include leadership, fraud investigation and insurance specific qualifications. They all allow our people to develop in their current role and provide a fantastic platform for future career opportunities.

“Apprenticeships take one to five years to complete depending on their level and we’re there to support our people every step of the way.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
