’We call on each and every one of the delegates to become climate heroes themselves and to help change their industry,’ says spokesperson

Extinction Rebellion (XR) is set to hold a protest with a model sports car at the upcoming Biba Conference.

XR said that, through its Insure Our Survival campaign, protesters would demand the industry stops backing fossil fuel projects as delegates arrive at the conference in Manchester Central on 14 May 2025.

The protest will begin just after 8am with the arrival of a life-sized model of a Lamborghini, which will be “made to look as though its sinking in flood waters to highlight the danger of extreme weather events caused by the climate crisis”, XR added.

There is also set to be a climate choir, samba drummers, street theatre, synchronised dance and testimonies by people affected by extreme weather.

Other groups set to take part in the protest include Friends of the Earth and Manchester Greenpeace. XR said that Biba Conference delegates will be “invited to engage with” the activities held.

A spokesperson for the protest said: “We look forward to welcoming the delegates back to Manchester and hope we will inspire them to take action.

”The insurance industry is well aware of the risk from climate change and cannot continue to ignore the issue. Business as usual is not an option.”

The conference, which is held in Manchester each year, provides an opportunity for the industry to network, do business together and hear from experts on a range of talking points.

This year’s theme has been dubbed A New Era, with Biba looking to take the opportunity to lead the conversation in defining what brokers want the future of the industry to look like.

The protest spokesperson said: “We call on each and every one of the delegates to become climate heroes themselves and to help change their industry.”
